detailed 3-day itinerary for climbing Toubkal, starting and ending in Marrakech.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil – Start the Trek

Morning: Departure from Marrakech:

  • Time: 8:00 AM
  • Mode of Transport: Private car.
  •  Duration: Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours drive
  • Route: Travel via the scenic road through the Atlas Mountains.
  • Distance: 65 kilometers (40 miles) Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Atlas Mountains as you leave the hustle and bustle of Marrakech behind. The road climbs gently, passing through charming Berber villages along the way.

Arrival in Imlil:

  • Time: 10:00 AM
  • Imlil is a picturesque village at 1,740 meters (5,709 feet) above sea level, nestled in a valley surrounded by towering peaks. This is where your trek to Mount Toubkal begins.

Lunch in Imlil:

  • We stop at a local guesthouses in Imlil where we can have a light lunch . (traditional Moroccan dishes like tagine, couscous, or a sandwich).
  • Alternatively, we can enjoy a packed lunch to save time.

Afternoon:

  • Trek from Imlil to Toubkal Refuge:
  • Time: Start trekking around 1:00 PM
  • Distance: 10 kilometers (6 miles)
  • Duration: Approximately 5 to 6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: From 1,740 meters (Imlil) to 3,200 meters (Toubkal Refuge)
  • Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
  • Trail: The trail is well-marked and offers stunning views of the valley, the surrounding mountains, and Berber villages along the way. The path climbs steadily, passing through forests and open meadows.

Arrival at Toubkal Refuge:

  • Time: 6:30 PM
  • The Toubkal Refuge (also known as the Neltner Refuge) is a basic, but comfortable, mountain hut where climbers typically stay overnight before summiting Toubkal.
  • After settling in, you can enjoy a warm dinner (often included in your package if you book a guided trek) and prepare for the summit attempt the next day.

Day 2: Summit Day – Toubkal Summit and Return to Refuge

Morning:

  • Wake up: 4:30 AM
  • Breakfast: Light breakfast at the refuge (typically tea, bread, and some jam).
  • Start the Ascent: 5:00 AM

Summiting Mount Toubkal:

  • Distance: 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the summit
  • Elevation Gain: From 3,200 meters (Refuge) to 4,167 meters (Summit)
  • Duration: 4 to 5 hours for ascent
  • Difficulty: Strenuous
  • Route: The ascent to the summit is a challenging hike. The trail is steep, andconditions may be cold or windy, especially early in the morning. You will pass rocky terrain, snow (depending on the season), and high-altitude landscapes. Make sure you pace yourself and take regular breaks to avoid altitude sickness.

At the Summit:

  • Time: Approx. 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM
  • Once you reach the top, take time to enjoy the panoramic views of the High Atlas Mountains and beyond. On clear days, you can see all the way to the Sahara Desert. It’s a rewarding experience, so take plenty of photos, but remember to stay warm and hydrated.

Afternoon:

  • Descent: 10:30 AM
  • After spending some time at the summit, begin the descent back to theToubkal Refuge.
  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours for descent

Lunch at the Refuge: 2:00 PM

  • Once back at the refuge, enjoy a hearty lunch to refuel.

Rest: After lunch, you can take a well-deserved rest, relax, or explore the surrounding area.

Day 3: Return to Imlil and Drive Back to Marrakech

Morning: Breakfast: 7:00 AM

  • Descend from the Refuge to Imlil:
  • Time: Start descending around 8:00 AM
  • Distance: 10 kilometers (6 miles)
  • Duration: 4 to 5 hours The descent from the Toubkal Refuge to Imlil is mostly downhill and is relatively easier compared to the ascent. You’ll pass through the same landscape you saw on the way up, but now you’ll be able to take in the views from a different perspective.

Arrival in Imlil:

  • Time: 1:00 PM
  • Once you arrive in Imlil, we will have lunch at one of the local restaurants orguesthouses.

Afternoon:

  • Drive Back to Marrakech:
  • Time: 2:00 PM
  • Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Arrival in Marrakech: Around 4:00 PM

  1. Weather and Gear: The weather can change rapidly, so be prepared for cold temperatures, especially at the summit. Make sure you have layers, warm clothing, a hat, gloves, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear for the trek.
  2. Fitness Level: Toubkal is a challenging trek, especially because of its altitude. Ensure
    you are in good physical condition and acclimatized to higher altitudes before attempting the summit.
    3. Accommodation: You can either stay in the Toubkal Refuge or choose to camp in the area (depending on your comfort level and the season).
    4. Safety: Keep hydrated and avoid overexertion. If you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, dizziness, nausea), it's crucial to descend to a lower elevation.
